Balmoral grades 2 & 3 students had a week of Pumpkin Mathness where they did a variety of math related activities with pumpkins. They did estimations, measurements, and comparisons of the weight, height and circumference of the pumpkins. They counted pumpkin seeds and created arrays of 2, 5, 10, etc. with them. They created pumpkin faces using pattern blocks,  patterns with dyed pumpkin seeds, and class graphs on Halloween topics.  To wrap up Pumpkin Mathness Week, students baked pumpkin muffins (with help from parent volunteers), which gave them another opportunity to learn math concepts. While baking students did more measurements, worked with fractions and determined doubling/halving strategies.  Yes indeed, math is everywhere!
