French Immersion

French Immersion is a second language program designed for children whose first language is not French and who have little or no knowledge of French prior to entering the program.  The goal of French Immersion programming is to bring students to a high level of bilingualism in order to function in a French environment when they graduate from secondary school.

Important benefits of second language learning include:

  • Enhanced career opportunities
  • Strengthened vocabulary, listening skills and communication skills
  • Increased achievement in reading, language skills and mathematics
  • Making travel abroad more accessible
  • Enabling further study opportunities

Students are admitted into French Immersion programming in the Interlake School Division in Kindergarten or Grade One and would be considered for admission in later grades under exceptional circumstances.

French Immersion programming is only offered in the community of Stonewall, but regardless of school catchment area within the division students are eligible for the French Immersion program and are provided with transportation to and from school.
