Manitoba Education has mandated two additional inservice days for all schools prior to the December break. The two additional inservice days in ISD will be December 4 and 7. Tuesday, December 8 will remain a Day 1 on the 6-day calendar as originally scheduled.
The students in The Infinity Program (TIP) have had the opportunity to spend time and get involved with the Robb Nash Project, headed by Canadian singer-songwriter, Robb Nash. The project works to engage young people through the power of music and storytelling and addresses topics related to mental health such as depression, anxiety, self-harm, addiction, bullying and suicidal ideation. At the end of September approximately 200 ISD grade 4 students took part in the annual Ecology Day at Oak Hammock Marsh. The staff at the marsh led the students in activities such as critter dipping, a marsh walk, ecology games and a lesson on Hawks, Owls & Falcons. Presentations were in English and French. Thankfully the weather cooperated, and both students and teachers reported the day to be a success.
Part of our school plan is to increase student discussion in the classroom, and to encourage students to explain their thinking when problem solving. One approach we are taking at Balmoral School is to practice discussing topics/issues with peers. Our grade 3 and 4 students are using discussion cards to show them different ways to respectfully communicate with each other. Stony Mountain School held a Drop In Family Games Night on Feb.6th from 5-7pm. Families enjoyed popcorn and hot chocolate while learning new card and dice games.
Teulon Elementary School once again focused some of our holiday cheer on helping our community – specifically the Teulon & District Christmas Cheer Board. Over a 2 week period, classes tracked their progress daily by charting the number of items they brought it. Students estimated how many items their class would bring in and how many the school would bring in as a whole.
