Throughout the month of February, our students and staff celebrate I Love to Read in some way every day. The tournament of books contenders are decided prior to the start of the month to ensure that both brackets are filled – and there is a vote held everyday. When daily winners are announced, you can hear the cheers and groans and the number of competitors lessen. Some highlights of the month include our Reading Campout, where tents, cots, sleeping bags and flashlights make their way to school for 100 minutes of reading. There is a book tasting, where students get to ‘try’ out the various book ‘entrees’ for their small group reading choices for the month of March. We invite Rosser school for the majority of a day, in the morning portion of their visit, Rosser students get to meet all their future staff members with some small group read-a-louds, then get partnered with a Grosse Isle student for a partner read-a-loud, as well opportunity to make a monster book mark that they get to take home with them. In the afternoon, there is opportunity to take advantage of our out door rink, and skating with their older reading partners. It is a great day for community building between our schools. We finish the month with Starbooks Café, where students are served hot chocolate or tea and a doughnut by their Barista, Mrs. Clemis and settle into some reading in a café setting. Each student had the opportunity to create their own individually designed cups in Art classes. I Love to Read Month is a great way to highlight literacy, as well as opportunities with community building with our partner schools. A huge thank you goes out to the staff of Grosse Isle that support all the additional activities that occur throughout the month, and an extra thank you to Mrs. Amanda Clemis for her overall coordination of the month!
